What to discover?
Biarritz became famous in the middle of the XIX century, with the Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) who fell in love with the city. Behind the Grande Plage, you may visit the Casino, a fine example of 1930s architecture. Strolling in the city, you will get a feeling of the town’s golden age.
With its large beaches and powerful waves, Biarritz is the European capital of surf since the 1950s. The water based activities are numerous in Biarritz: sea diving centres, thalassotherapy, etc. If you are not too keen on water based activities, you may also practice golf, horse-riding, trekking and the region’s own game, Basque Pelota.
Close to Biarritz, you may discover Bayonne with its Vauban ramparts, pedestrian centre, banks of the Nive, gothic Cathedral, etc. You may also visit Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye.
